Barbershop singing arrived in Bolton in 1975 when four local men, George Denton, Terry Smith, Walter Mariner and Brian Turner, known as “The Four Strops” sang in and around the town to raise money for charity. The quartet broke up in 1978 and in 1979 George and Terry decided to form a Barbershop Chorus, with Terry taking on the job of chorus director. Being very proud of their roots they called themselves “The Cottontown Chorus”.
Singing with Phoenix Knights of Harmony is all about having an enjoyable time together, and singing to raise money for local charities.
What we partake in is : rehearsing every Tuesday at the Conservative Club, (Astley Bridge, Bolton) regular sing-outs, annual dinner, and visiting other Barbershop Choruses throughout the country. Our most recent 3 day trip photos can be viewed in the photos link above. We welcome visitors and any interested males who may like to consider joining us. For a great hobby and enjoyable company – come and see us!
What are Phoenix Knights of Harmony all about?
History of Phoenix Knights of Harmony
Rapidly growing in numbers, the chorus made their first stage debut in 1980 as “Mike Warmers” at a Barbershop convention held at Manchester University. Going from strength to strength they qualified for the British Barbershop Chorus Championships in 1986 and in 1992 broke into the top ten of 42 choruses.
Terry Smith then decided it was time to hand over his baton to younger blood and the chorus continued to prosper under new direction. They went on to win the coveted GOLD at the Championships in 2005, going on to represent Britain at International level in the USA in 2006.
This is the point where the Phoenix Knights of Harmony were formed for those members who preferred a less competitive edge. PKofH was started by former members of The Cottontown Chorus in 2006.
