2020 and 2021 have not produced too many “startling moments” for our Phoenix Knights due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, the most memorable occasion was when our Terry Smith celebrated his 90th Birthday
Terry was one of the four original members of the Four Strops together with George Denton, Walt Mariner and Brian Turner. That was way back when Terry was only 46 and they then formed the Cottontown Chorus in 1979. In 2005, the Cottontown Chorus attained the Gold Medal as National Barbershop Champions for the first time. Soon afterwards Terry was instrumental in setting up of the Phoenix Knights of Harmony where he remains an active singing member on the risers.
Terry is a Life President of the Cottontown Chorus, along with George Denton. Previous incumbents of this role include Bill Waddington (Percy Sugden) in Granada TV’s Coronation Street
In order to mark Terry’s 90th Birthday on the 27th September, it seemed only fitting that Terry would be offered, and indeed accepted, the role of Life President of the Phoenix Knights of Harmony, alongside George Denton
Gerry Marsden, Chairman, said it was “a great honour and privilege to present Terry with his Life President Award. Terry is respected nationally and internationally for his dedication and enduring commitment to barbershop singing” This presentation took place at our rehearsal night on 6th October 2021 and we completed his evening with the Irish Blessing and, may the road rise to meet you, Terry, from all your fellow singers
